Steven Estey

Consultant

Until 2010 Steven was the Human Rights Officer at Disabled Peoples’ International (DPI), an International NGO with members in 130 countries, which focuses on the Human Rights of people with disabilities. In that capacity Steven traveled widely, working with disabled peoples’ organizations, governments, and UN agencies. Over time he has developed experience in the areas of international cooperation, economic development, human rights and disability. He has testified before several parliamentary committees in Canada and spoken on issues related to human rights and people with disabilities at the United Nations and in many countries.

From 2003, until the successful conclusion of the negotiations in 2006, Steven was a member of Canada’s official government delegation to the UN, which drafted the new Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (CRPD), the first Human Rights treaty of the 21st Century. Between 2007 and 2010, he led DPI’s global work to encourage swift ratification of the CRPD and its rigorous implementation world-wide.

Since leaving DPI in 2010, Steven has been focusing on key areas of CRPD implementation, including, amongst other things, the intersection of disability and HIV/AIDS.  Steven has a BA in Philosophy from St. Francis Xavier University and a Masters in International Development Studies from St. Mary's, both in Canada.
