Joni Seager

Consultant

Joni is an activist and scholar in feminist geography, international women's studies, and global environmental policy. For many years, she was a member of the ownership collective of New Words Bookstore in Cambridge, Massachusetts, one of the first and most prominent feminist bookstores in the US.

She is currently Professor and Chair of the Global Studies Department at Bentley University in Boston, Massachusetts. Joni is the author of 10 books, and more than three dozen reports, articles, and chapters in books. In the environmental field, she was an early pioneer in bringing feminist perspectives to bear on global environmental policy and analysis. Her award-winning international atlas on the global status of women, Women in the World, is published in several international editions. She has been an active consultant with the United Nations on several gender and environmental policy projects, including consulting with the UN Environmental Programme on integrating gender perspectives into their work on disasters and early warning systems, with the Division on Economic and Social Affairs on gender in water policy, and with UNESCO’s World Water Assessment Programme on gender mainstreaming. She was co-PI a project on gender and water in Mongolia, and recently served as a consultant to the government of Mozambique on developing a national strategic plan on gender, environment and climate change. Joni is working with AIDS-Free World as an advisor on research, visual display, graphic representation, and data management of geographically-based information.
